Saturday's rally was part of the grassroots organization 50501's nationwide May Day/May Day Strong rallies, which began Thursday and continued through the weekend in the United States and in the United Kingdom and France. 50501 stands for 50 protests, 50 states, one day and refers to the movement born on Reddit and the first nationwide protest against President Donald Trump's policies on Feb. 5. Since then there have been protests on Feb. 17, March 4, April 5, April 19 and today's.
May 1 or May Day, is also known as International Workers Day, marking the progress of the labor movement. The demonstrations are targeting the Trump Administration and DOGE’s firing of tens of thousands of federal workers as well as the deportations of immigrants, including to El Salvador’s CECOT prison, without due process.
Other issues the organizers have spotlighted : Protecting Medicare and Social Security; providing healthcare for all and affordable housing; funding public schools; stopping attacks on people of color and trans people.
