ORANGE COUNTY REDISTRICTING

Let’s talk redistricting!

Orange County Democrats is hosting a half-hour Zoom training session today with a followup on May 27 to give residents “the tools and talking points to speak up for your community" as the Orange County Mid-Decennial Redistricting Advisory Committee works to finalize new district maps by its September deadline. Both sessions run 6 to 6:30 p.m.

Suitable for newbies and seasoned advocates, the training will cover “what redistricting is, why it matters, and how to deliver impactful public comments that advocate for fair and equitable maps,” according to the events page.

Following a November ballot measure in which voters elected to expand the Orange County Board of Commissioners by two seats, the 15-member Redistricting Advisory Committee was formed to carve eight districts out of the current six.

The committee is currently evaluating maps submitted by committee members (or residents with member sponsors) showing what the county might look like as each of the six districts loses 60,000 residents to create two new ones.

Committee meetings are open to the public and Orange County residents are encouraged to comment, which is the reason for the trainings. Sign up to attend either of the training sessions here.

The Redistricting Advisory Committee next meets on May 22, at 6 p.m. at the Orange County Administration Center at 201 South Rosalind Avenue in Orlando.
