Daughters of the American Revolution to honor fallen veterans in Oakland

The Daughters of the American Revolution's Winter Garden chapter  — formally known as the Adams Onis Treaty Chapter — will honor fallen veterans buried in Oakland’s two cemeteries with wreath-placing ceremonies on Dec. 13 at 11:30 a.m.

The wreath-placing ceremonies will begin at the Oakland Cemetery at Sadler Avenue and S. Walker Street and continue at the Oakland African-American Cemetery on West Colonial Drive. Seventy-two veterans are buried in the town's two cemeteries, according to a press release distributed by chapter Regent Wanda Kenney. Live fir wreaths will be placed at each grave site, and Taps will be played.

Open to the public, these ceremonies are part of the annual tradition of laying wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery, begun in 1992 and which eventually evolved into the nonprofit organization Wreaths Across America, whose mission is to “Remember the fallen, honor those who serve, teach the next generation the value of freedom.”
